Breast Augmentation or breast mammoplasty is an elective cosmetic procedure designed to increase the breast size, enhance its overall shape, and make your breasts more symmetrical. This procedure is performed by inserting breast implants or through fat transfer from an area of your body. Breast enlargement can be combined with a breast lift based on the patient’s desired look and the surgeon’s advice.
Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?
Women usually think of having this surgery to increase the fullness of their breasts and improve their body shape. You may be a good candidate for this surgery if:
- You have naturally small breasts
- Your breasts have lost some volume after weight loss
- The shape of your breasts is affected by pregnancy and breastfeeding
- You want to restore the aesthetic appearance of your breasts after undergoing surgery
What are the types of breast augmentation?
There are two main types of breast mammoplasty: fat transfer and breast implants. In both types, different options are available based on how you want your breasts to look.
Fat transfer. Dr Chiara will take some fat from a selected area in your body, such as belly, thighs, back, or flanks, and then inject this fat into the breasts.
Breast implants. Different types of implants can be used for breast augmentation, and choosing the right implant is essential to have the desired results.
Breast implant options include:
- Saline breast implants. This type is filled with sterile saline (saltwater) and can help improve the shape, firmness and feel of the breast.
- Silicone breast implants. This type of implants is made of silicone gel and is known for it’s long lasting and natural looking results.
- Gummy bear breast implants. These implants consist of silicone gel thicker than usual silicone implants, and they give a firmer look.
During your consultation, Dr Chiara will help you choose the right type of implants based on your body shape and cosmetic needs, so you can enjoy the best look.
How is breast augmentation performed?
Breast augmentation is a quick and easy procedure that takes about an hour, and sometimes it could be combined with a breast lift. There are some steps involved in breast augmentation. Here is an explanation of them:
Anesthesia
This procedure is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. Dr Chiara will determine which to choose based on your condition and medical history.
The incision
Breast augmentation can be performed in several ways. Dr Chiara can make the surgical incision within the natural fold under the breast, around the edge of the areola, or under the armpit.
Dr Chiara will discuss these possible methods with you before the surgery to determine which approach best suits your needs.
Implant insertion
Breast implants can be inserted either directly behind the breast and on top of the chest wall muscle, or behind the breast and chest wall muscle. The placement of the implants depends on various factors, including the implant type and the desired size of breasts.
Closing the incision
After placing the implants, Dr Chiara will stitch the incision sites and cover the breasts with a gauze bandage.
Are there any risks or side effects?
Side effects of breast augmentation may include:
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Bleeding
- Soreness
- Increased sensitivity in the nipple area
All these side effects are quite controllable and easy to deal with if you follow the instructions provided by Dr Chiara.
What happens after surgery?
After surgery, you will be taken to the recovery room to monitor your vital signs and ensure that you don’t have any complications. Once you fully recover from the anesthesia, you will be able to go home with the help of a friend or a family member. You will be able to resume your usual activities within one week of surgery, but the recovery period can vary from one patient to another. Dr Chiara will ask you to wear a special bra during the recovery period to provide support for your breasts and may also prescribe medication to manage pain and discomfort during the first few days after surgery. You will need to attened a follow-up appointment about one week after surgery to check the incision and remove the stitches.
What about the Results?
You will see immediate results right after your procedure, but they will continue to improve as swelling and bruising subside and will be fully apparent after 3 or 4 months.
The average lifespan of saline or silicone implants can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years, but they don’t last a lifetime and will need to replace them at some
